This study examines the spatial perception and expressive characteristics displayed in 11 Yugi (travelogues) written by Wol-sa Yi Jeong-gwi (李廷龜), a civil official and renowned man of letters in the mid-Joseon period. As an official-scholar, Yi Jeong-gwi embedded his observations and sentiments gathered from traveling to various domestic and international locations—despite the constraints of his official duties—into the Sino-Korean literary form of Yugi. This study categorizes his excursions into three distinct levels: “domestic private travel,” “envoy travel,” and “ceremonial travel,” thereby summarizing the key characteristics of his Yugi as follows. First, Yi Jeong-gwi’s Yugi extends beyond a mere chronicle of journeys to exhibit a narrative character involving “events and figures.” In his domestic travels, he transformed the spaces of excursion into spaces of refined elegance (pungryu) by integrating social interactions with activities such as playing musical instruments, drinking, and dancing. In his travelogues as an envoy, he meticulously documented the scenery and geographical details before him, offering readers the delight of “armchair travel” (wayu). Second, his Yugi are three-dimensionally shaped through the organic interaction of observation (gyeong), emotion (jeong), and intellectual insight (ui). Visiting Mount Songak as a ceremonial official (heongwan) for a rainmaking ritual, Yi Jeong-gwi advocated the restoration of Neo-Confucian rituals, while his travelogue on Jogye Waterfall combined the values of filial piety and fraternal respect (hyoje) with the landscape’s natural beauty. Furthermore, Yi Jeong-gwi’s Yugi transcends the limitations of abstract landscape excursions by organically synthesizing immediacy with human emotion.
