The Shadow of Jinling - The Origin and Innovation of Stone Statues at Hyeolleung and Geonwolleung in the Late Goryeo and Early Joseon Periods -
Hyeolleung(玄陵), the tomb of Goryeo’s King Gongmin, and Geonwolleung(健元陵), that of Joseon’s King Taejo, serve as two pivotal markers in the evolution of the stone statue system for royal burials from the late Goryeo to the early Joseon periods. Hyeolleung departed from earlier Goryeo conventions by systematically deploying both civil and military stone figures for the first time. Geonwolleung inherited the spatial layout of Hyeolleung while adjusting the combination and number of stone statues, establishing a paired arrangement of one set of civil officials and one set of military officials. A systematic comparison of the stone statues at these two tombs with contemporaneous Ming-dynasty stone carvings in and around Nanjing, China, reveals that the combination and stylistic features of Hyeolleung closely resemble those of the early Hongwu-period Ming Imperial Tomb and the tombs of meritorious officials such as Chang Yuchun and Kang Maocai. The types and style of the stone statues at Geonwolleung, in turn, are similar to the spirit way statuary at the tombs of Xu Da, Prince of Zhongshan, and Li Wenzhong, Prince of Qiyang. The differences between Hyeolleung and Geonwolleung are closely linked to the phased development of Ming tomb regulations from an incipient stage to full maturity. When Hyeolleung was constructed, early Ming funerary institutions were still rudimentary, and the combinations and images of stone carvings had not yet become standardized. By the time Geonwolleung was built, the regulations had become far more detailed and complete, and the stone statue grouping designated for princes had crystallized into a stable model through practical application. At the same time, the stone carvings at both tombs were profoundly shaped by indigenous Korean traditions. The ring-like arrangement of outward-facing stone animals around the royal burial mound had been a long-standing practice since the Unified Silla period—one that was faithfully preserved at both Hyeolleung and Geonwolleung. Thus, despite their emulation of Ming funerary conventions, these two tombs present a unique character distinct from their Chinese counterparts. The transformation of the combinations and forms of stone statues at royal tombs during the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods was neither a simple imitation nor a passive acceptance of the Ming-dynasty spirit-way stone carvings in Nanjing. Rather, it was the outcome of a continuous process of negotiation, integration, and reinvention between the Ming institutional framework and indigenous Korean funerary traditions, and it profoundly shaped the royal tomb system of the subsequent Joseon dynasty.
