This study explores the meaning and role of art as represented in Han Kang’s novels. In these works, artists occupy the center of the narrative either as protagonists or as major characters. In her novels, artists appear as sculptors in Your Cold Hands (2002), a video artist in The Mongolian Mark–The Vegetarian trilogy (2004), a painter in The Wind Blows, Go (2010), and a woodworker in We Do Not Part (2021). What function, then, does art perform in works that ultimately address human concerns rather than art itself? In Han Kang’s fiction, art constitutes another realm of interpretation, functioning as a medium through which human experiences are conveyed in emotional forms. Throughout this series of novels, Han Kang serves simultaneously as an active interpreter and as a creator who incorporates various forms of art into her fiction. Through these artistic representations, she leads readers to experience the diverse emotions evoked by her subjects and invites them to engage with the questions she raises. In Your Cold Hands (2002), Han Kang focuses on the wounds of the living. Rather than looking at the exterior of the human body, the sculptor turns inward, seeking to heal wounds and lead the wounded toward regeneration. In The Mongolian Mark (Literature and Society, Fall 2004), the author presents the function of art paradoxically. The novel suggests that an art that fails to take into account the place where we stand and the relationship between the self and the other can neither sustain its existence in the world nor justify its reason for being. In The Wind Blows, Go (2010), the artists remain faithful to the reality given to them, in contrast to the video artist in “The Mongolian Mark.” Their commitment to enduring and living through the storms of life is embodied in the motif of ink spreading across paper in ink-and-wash painting. In We Do Not Part (2021), Han Kang turns her attention to the wounds of the dead. The woodworker recreates and brings into the present the wounds borne by victims of large-scale violence, including the victims of the Jeju 4·3 Incident. In Han Kang’s fiction, art connects readers to a world beyond language by giving concrete form to abstract emotions. Artists intensify the significance of events and themes by appropriating the perspective of the novelist—the “one who writes.” What the writer cannot express through language is represented through painting or sculpture by the “one who paints” or the “one who sculpts.” In these works, where the novelist and the artist appear together, the emotional duet created by the two figures foregrounds the gravity of the events and maximizes the reader’s empathy. Artists and their works evoke diverse emotions in readers and expand their imaginative experience.
