At the beginning of the 20th century, many Chinese intellectuals sought to introduce Western literary trends to China through study abroad in the West, hoping to promote the development of modern Chinese literature. Xiao Qian, an important writer and translator in the history of modern Chinese literature, resided in England from 1939 to 1946, where he was active as a war correspondent and Chinese-language teacher. During his stay in England, Xiao Qian engaged extensively with British cultural circles and vividly conveyed the realities of China's wartime front to Western audiences. He also published five English-language books in the UK, systematically introducing Western readers to the May Fourth New Culture Movement and the situation of modern China through both translation and original writing. In the process of publishing his English works, Xiao Qian actively engaged with British writers, holding lively discussions on the understanding of the works' content as well as on the setting of titles and covers. At the same time, correspondence—as a medium of cross-cultural literary transmission—played an important role not as a physical space in the traditional sense, but as a new kind of literary space. Based on the discovery of new historical sources, this study examines Xiao Qian's cross-cultural literary space through three dimensions: "the generation of literary space—cross-cultural negotiation and dialogue—reconstruction of the image of China." Accordingly, it focuses on the literary interactions between the British intellectual elite and Xiao Qian, a leading figure of Chinese modernist literature, and analyzes the literary exchange network jointly constructed by Chinese and British intellectuals. In doing so, the study moves beyond the limitations of existing research that views British modernism as a unidirectional transmission, reinterprets the dialogue and cultural identity formed between the two intellectual groups, and further reconsiders Xiao Qian's historical contribution to facilitating the paradigm shift in the cross-cultural transmission of modernist literature.

20세기 초, 중국의 많은 지식인들은 서구 유학을 통해 서양의 문학 사조를 중국에 소개하고 중국 현대 문학의 발전을 도모하고자 했다. 샤오첸은 중국 현대문학사에서 중요한 작가이자 번역가로서 1939년부터 1946년까지 영국에 거주하며 전쟁 기자 겸 중국어 교사로 활약했다. 영국에 머무는 동안 샤오첸은 영국 문화계와 폭넓게 교류하며 당시 중국의 전쟁 현장을 생생하게 소개했다. 그리고 영국에서 5권의 영어 저서를 출판하여 번역과 창작을 통해 서양 독자들에게 5‧4 신문화운동과 현대 중국의 상황을 체계적으로 소개하였다. 영어 저서가 출판되는 과정에서 샤오첸은 영국 작가들과 적극적으로 교류하며, 작품 내용의 이해 및 제목과 표지 설정 등에 대해 열띤 토론을 벌였다. 동시에, 문화 간 문학 전파 매체로서의 서신은 전통적인 의미의 물리적 공간이 아닌 새로운 문학공간으로서 중요한 역할을 했다. 본 연구는 새로운 사료의 발견에 기초하여, 샤오첸의 문화간 문학 공간의 "문학공간의 생성-문화간 협상과 대화-중국 이미지 재구성"의 세 가지 측면에서 고찰하고자 한다. 따라서 영국 지식 엘리트와 중국 모더니즘 문학의 대표 작가인 샤오첸 간의 문학적 상호작용을 중점적으로 살펴보고, 중영 지식인들이 공동으로 구축한 문학 교류 네트워크를 분석하여, 기존 연구에서 영국 모더니즘을 단방향 전파로 보는 인식의 한계에서 벗어나, 두 지식 집단 간의 대화와 문화적 정체성을 재해석하며, 나아가 모더니즘 문학의 문화 간 전파 패러다임 전환을 촉진하는 과정에서 샤오첸의 역사적 기여를 재고찰하였다.
