This study focuses on the inaugural exhibition of Hong Kong’s M+ Museum, titled "M+ Sigg Collection: From Revolution to Globalization," aiming to analyze how the exhibition structured the narrative of the evolution of contemporary Chinese art and to identify its achievements and limitations. When the M+ Museum opened in 2021, it presented six inaugural exhibitions that outlined the institution’s scope of collection, research, and historical perspective. This particular exhibition comprised approximately 200 works organized into seven sections, depicting the development of contemporary Chinese art from the 1970s through the 2000s. It is important to distinguish between the narrative time frame covered by the exhibition and the production dates of the works in the Sigg Collection (1972–2012). This study defines the exhibition narrative as the process by which the exhibition title, section organization, selection and arrangement of works, and official commentary interact to form a specific historical understanding. Based on this definition, the study comprehensively reviewed the M+ Museum’s official exhibition materials, collection information, exhibition videos, related catalogs, and prior research, analyzing the arrangement of the seven sections and the interrelations among key works. However, internal curatorial intentions not publicly disclosed and actual visitor responses were excluded from the scope of this analysis. The analysis found that the first three sections chronologically connected official art and unofficial practices, the ‘85 New Wave Art Movement,’ and the process of gaining international visibility in the 1990s. In contrast, the latter four sections expanded the thematic and media scope of the works by focusing on the body, urbanization, globalization, and the interplay of image and text. By combining chronological and thematic arrangements, the exhibition transformed the complex history of contemporary Chinese art into accessible public knowledge for visitors. At the same time, it represented a significant institutional achievement by converting the privately formed Sigg Collection into a public museum resource for research and exhibition. However, this high level of readability also carries the risk of leading viewers to perceive the Sigg Collection’s acquisition path and scope of works as the representative historical trajectory of contemporary Chinese art. In conclusion, "M+ Sigg Collection: From Revolution to Globalization" can be regarded not only as an inaugural exhibition that systematically visualized the major transitions in contemporary Chinese art but also as an exhibition that expanded the selection and scope of a specific collection into the realm of public art history. Therefore, the academic significance of this exhibition is not limited merely to the scale of works displayed; it becomes clearer when the historical readability constructed by the exhibition narrative and the limitations of representativeness revealed in the process are examined together.
