This study conducts a comparative analysis of the treatises on calligraphy by Sun Guoting (孫過庭, c. 648–703) and Zhang Huaiguan (張懷瓘, dates unknown), two representative theorists of the Tang dynasty, in order to examine the major concepts and characteristics of their Calligraphic Aesthetics. The Tang dynasty was a flourishing period in the history of Chinese calligraphy, during which the various script styles formed in preceding dynasties were established and traditional calligraphy theory was systematized. Accordingly, this study examined the trends and evolution of Tang dynasty calligraphy theory through the treatises on calligraphy left by Sun Guoting of the early Tang dynasty and Zhang Huaiguan of the high Tang dynasty. The study focused primarily on Sun Guoting’s Shupu(書譜, Treatise on Calligraphy) and Zhang Huaiguan’s Shuduan(書斷, Judgments on Calligraphy), comparing their calligraphic aesthetics by categorizing them into the theory of origin, the theory of aesthetics, the theory of criticism, and the theory of artistic creation. First, both Sun Guoting and Zhang Huaiguan find the basis for the origin of calligraphy in xiang (象) in the Zhouyi (周易), and understand Yinyang Duidai (陰陽對待) as a principle of change and harmony in calligraphy. Through guanwu quxiang (觀物取象), Sun Guoting focuses on the process in which images of nature are mediated through the body and transformed into the forms of dots, strokes, and structural composition. Zhang Huaiguan, by contrast, discusses the origin of calligraphy more systematically through faxiang (法象) and the Hetu and Luoshu (河圖洛書), explaining how the principles of nature proceed from hexagram images to written characters and ultimately to calligraphy. Second, regarding the nature of calligraphic beauty, Sun Guoting emphasizes harmony between zhi (質) and wen (文), as well as between the ancient and the contemporary, through Zhiwen Sanbian (質文三變) and Wenzhi Binbin (文質彬彬). Zhang Huaiguan, on the other hand, places importance on Shencai (神采) as manifested in the work and clarifies the distinctive artistic characteristics of calligraphy through his theory of yixiang (意象), including the notions of “soundless music” and “formless image” (無聲之音·無形之相). Third, Sun Guoting discusses the relative merits of the Four Worthies (四賢), whereas Zhang Huaiguan develops a three-grade theory (三品論) that emphasizes fengshen guqi (風神骨氣). Their evaluations of the Two Wangs (二王) also reveal different aesthetic criteria. Sun Guoting presents an aesthetic outlook centered on zhonghe (中和), while Zhang Huaiguan places greater emphasis on the aesthetics of qi (奇) and yi (逸). Fourth, Sun Guoting presents a three-stage development of calligraphy—pingzheng (平正) → xianjue (險絕) → pingzheng (平正)—through his theory of Sanshi Sanbian (三時三變論). Through the Five Concordances and Five Discordances (五合·五乖), he also discusses the optimal conditions for artistic creation and the beauty of zishi (自適). Zhang Huaiguan, through the theory of Tianfu Ziran (天賦自然論), gives priority to innate disposition and emphasizes a creative state of Wuwei Ziran (無爲自然) that accords with the Dao (道) of nature. In addition, through the theory of Yixian Bihou (意先筆後論), Sun Guoting emphasizes artistic creation in which internalized principles are applied according to intention. Zhang Huaiguan, by contrast, emphasizes the free application of internalized principles through the theory of Wufa Zhi Fa (無法之法論), which is manifested in the flexible adaptation of fa (法). In conclusion, by comparing the calligraphic theories of Sun Guoting and Zhang Huaiguan, this study examines the changes and development of calligraphic aesthetic thought from the early Tang to the High Tang. It also identifies the commonalities and differences in their theories, together with the characteristics of Confucian and Daoist thought, thereby broadening the understanding of the nature and value of calligraphy. Furthermore, it offers a perspective from which the aesthetic criteria of the two theorists may be applied complementarily to the appreciation and criticism of calligraphic works. The significance of this study also lies in providing a theoretical basis for exploring connections between these theories and actual artistic practice.
