The purpose of this study is to examine the possibilities of traditional East Asian painting mounting (janghwang, 粧潢) as a form of contemporary art by reinterpreting it through Nicolas Bourriaud’s theory of Relational Aesthetics. Existing studies on janghwang have primarily focused on art history and the conservation of cultural heritage, while relatively little research has interpreted janghwang as an aesthetic system in its own right. Accordingly, this study understands janghwang not merely as a technique of preservation and decoration, but as a formative device that establishes and expands relationships among humans, artworks, and viewers. The study analyzes the characteristics of janghwang from three perspectives: mobility, participation through wayu (臥遊), and expansiveness through jeop (接). First, janghwang is a formative practice that developed on the basis of the mobility of paper and the spatial structures of East Asian architecture, and thus possesses relational characteristics distinct from the fixed modes of display associated with Western painting. Second, the concept of wayu enables the viewer’s mind to participate within the pictorial space, allowing the painting to function as a “public square of encounter” where multiple viewers can meet. Finally, through the examples of the horizontal scroll of Mongyudo-wondo (夢遊桃源圖), the horizontal scroll of Sehando (歲寒圖), and Baeknapbyeong (百衲屛), this study demonstrates that janghwang constitutes an open structure that accommodates new relationships and continuously expands the meaning of an artwork. Through this analysis, the study identifies aspects within the traditional practice of janghwang that correspond to the structures of relation, participation, and expansion conceptualized by Bourriaud in his theories of Relational Aesthetics. However, rather than retrospectively equating janghwang with Relational Aesthetics, this study employs Bourriaud’s concepts as a limited and comparative framework for analyzing the relational structures inherent in janghwang. In particular, although Mongyudo-wondo, Sehando, and Baeknapbyeong were formed within different historical contexts, they share the characteristic that janghwang reorganizes relationships among planners, makers, collectors, and viewers while simultaneously expanding the meanings of the artworks. On this basis, the study suggests the possibility that the mobility, participation, and expansiveness of janghwang may be connected to postcolonial discussions that reconsider modern Western-centered concepts of exhibition and the artwork.
