This study examines the relationship between ESG decoupling and corporate financial performance by focusing on the gap between firms’ ESG disclosure and external ESG performance evaluation. Prior research has shown limited comparability due to inconsistent measures of ESG decoupling. To address this issue, this study proposes a refined measure that combines qualitative disclosure data with quantitative ESG evaluation data from an external institution. ESG disclosure is quantified through text analysis of sustainability reports, while ESG performance evaluation is measured using ESG evaluation scores provided by the Korea Institute of Corporate Governance and Sustainability (KCGS). After standardizing both measures, this study calculates the ESG disclosure-performance evaluation gap (DC) by subtracting standardized ESG performance evaluation from standardized ESG disclosure. Using a sample of Korean listed firms, the results show that DC is associated with contrasting financial outcomes. Specifically, a higher DC, indicating that ESG disclosure is higher relative to external ESG performance evaluation, is associated with lower accounting-based performance measured by return on assets (ROA), but higher market-based performance measured by Tobin’s Q. These findings suggest that capital markets may respond positively to ESG disclosure signals in the short term, whereas such positive market valuation does not necessarily imply improvements in firms’ operational performance. This study contributes to the literature by refining the measurement of ESG decoupling and by showing that its implications differ between accounting-based and market-based performance outcomes. The findings also suggest that firms should consider not only the alignment between ESG disclosure and external ESG evaluation but also stakeholder-specific responses to ESG information.
