A Comparative Study of User Perceptions of Individual and Integrated Pedestrian Safety Systems from a Public Design Perspective
This study aims to compare and analyze user perceptions of existing individual pedestrian safety systems and an integrated pedestrian safety system from a public design perspective, and to examine the exploratory applicability of an integrated design for a universal pedestrian safety environment that considers the diverse sensory, cognitive, and mobility characteristics of pedestrians. To this end, perceptions of pedestrian safety were investigated for audible pedestrian signal guidance devices, floor-level pedestrian signal devices, and pedestrian signal automatic extension systems, along with public design perceptions of existing pedestrian signals and pedestrian signal auxiliary devices. The integrated system was conceptualized as complementarily linking the visual, auditory, and crossing-time support functions of these devices, and perceptions of pedestrian safety and public design, as well as intention to use the system, were analyzed. The results showed that the floor-level pedestrian signal device received the highest rating for perceived pedestrian safety among the individual systems, followed by the audible pedestrian signal guidance device and the pedestrian signal automatic extension system. Differences in perceived pedestrian safety among the auxiliary devices were statistically significant. In contrast, no statistically significant differences were found in perceptions of pedestrian safety or public design between the individual and integrated systems. Therefore, rather than concluding that the integrated system is superior or effective, this study examined its exploratory applicability from the perspective of a universal pedestrian safety environment that considers diverse pedestrians. This study provides foundational data for the future integrated design of pedestrian safety facilities and improvements in public design.
