The declining school-age population and rapid changes in industrial structure have revealed the limitations of traditional, major-centered academic systems in providing flexible learning environments. These developments call for restructuring discipline-based curricula and educational content, as well as reforming higher education to promote competency-based learning and interdisciplinary integration. This study aims to explore the significance and potential of microdegrees within university curricula and, drawing on a curriculum design case tailored to the design field, examine their applicability in design education and their educational implications for learners. The study established the theoretical characteristics of modular curricula underpinning microdegree design and analyzed microdegree implementation at major universities in Korea and abroad. Building on this analysis, it closely examined the educational objectives, curriculum structure, operational framework, and feedback mechanisms of the Cultural Branding & Promotion MD, jointly designed by the Department of Media Design and the Department of Cultural Content. As a result of this study, the findings identified the educational implications of the Cultural Branding & Promotion MD across three dimensions. First, from the learner perspective, the study highlighted the potential for students to develop career-relevant competencies and expand their learning pathways while retaining their primary major. Second, from the perspective of instructors and curriculum design, the study established a foundation for interdisciplinary education by linking courses across majors around shared competencies, with scope to include additional departments and broaden educational content. Third, from the perspective of industry and community integration, the program demonstrated the potential to foster practical capabilities, problem-solving skills, and collaboration abilities concurrently through field-based collaborative projects. Universities need to establish effective educational frameworks that help learners enhance competencies aligned with their aptitudes and career goals in response to social and industrial changes. This study is expected to inform the development of educational strategies that support these frameworks.
