Foucault’s concept of heterotopia has been widely adopted since his death across urban studies, architecture, and human geography as a “space of resistance” or an “alternative site of practice.” This paper argues that the practice and transformation such readings attribute to heterotopia are not systematically developed, at least within Foucault’s account of its functions in “Of Other Spaces.” Those attributes belong rather to what Lefebvre theorizes as representational space (espace de représentation). The conceptual conflation follows from the fact that Foucault’s account remains a provisional sketch, leaving room for such meanings to be projected onto it. Through an asymmetric comparison of the two spatial theories, the paper identifies a fundamental divergence in their underlying logics: the shift from arrangement to production. Foucault’s spatial thought, organized around “Of Other Spaces” and Discipline and Punish, is governed by a logic of arrangement: spaces are classified, juxtaposed, and regulated by power. Lefebvre’s spatial theory, by contrast, conceives space as socially produced through the triadic dialectic (triplicité) of spatial practice, representations of space, and representational space. The two concepts diverge not in whether heterogeneity is present but in the direction in which it operates. The heterogeneity of heterotopia, whose two functions Foucault defines as illusion and compensation, is recuperated into the existing order along the mirror’s movement of return. That of representational space, by contrast, arises as a produced difference, one that presupposes the rupture of the system rather than occupying a place the system has already allotted, and it opens a fissure in that order through the practice of appropriation and the lived body that sustains it. This fissure is not an accomplished state but a condition that must be made again and again. Lefebvre’s three direct critiques of Foucault and Foucault’s silence on Lefebvre reflect not personal indifference but a structural divergence in methodology between Foucault’s method, from archaeology to genealogy, which brackets totalizing social theory, and Lefebvre’s Marxist dialectics. By clarifying this difference, the paper critically re-examines the reception of heterotopia and re-situates both concepts within their proper theoretical contexts.
