This paper critically examines the logical limitations of modern revisionist interpretations that deny or diminish the reality of ‘prime matter’ in Aristotle's metaphysics and physics. To this end, moving beyond the traditional pro-and-con dichotomy, this study reclassifies revisionism into ‘instrumental revisionism’ and ‘eliminative revisionism’ based on their philosophical implications. Instrumental revisionism, represented by David Charles, reduces prime matter to a logical and abstract object for the realization of form, thereby degrading substantial transformation into mere ‘replacement’ and overlooking the non-teleological physical necessity inherent in matter. On the other hand, eliminative revisionism, represented by William Charlton and Mary Louise Gill, attempts to reduce matter to linguistic conventions or the persistence of specific qualities. However, this approach undermines the notion of substance as a composite and commits the error of ‘reification’ by assigning a specific nature to an ultimate principle. In conclusion, the comprehensive failure of the revisionist project to explain the continuity of substantial change paradoxically proves the inevitability of a realistic restoration of prime matter to avoid the Parmenidean dilemma of ‘creation ex nihilo’.

본 논문은 아리스토텔레스의 자연학과 형이상학에서 ‘제일질료(prime matter)’의 실재성을 부정하거나 그 역할을 축소하려는 현대 수정주의적(revisionist) 해석의 논리적 한계를 비판적으로 고찰한다. 이를 위해 기존의 평면적인 찬반 구도를 넘어, 수정주의를 철학적 함의에 따라 ‘도구적 수정주의’와 ‘제거적 수정주의’로 재분류하였다. David Charles로 대변되는 도구적 수정주의는 제일질료를 형상 실현을 위한 논리적, 추상적 대상으로 격하시킴으로써 실체 변환을 단순한 ‘대체(replacement)’로 전락시키고, 원소 차원에서 질료가 가질 수 있는 고유의 비목적론적 물리적 필연성을 간과하는 한계를 지닌다. 한편 William Charlton과 Mary Louis Gill로 대변되는 제거적 수정주의는 질료를 언어적 관습이나 특정 성질의 존속으로 환원하려 시도하나, 이는 실체를 복합체가 아닌 단순체로 훼손하고 궁극적 원리에 본성을 부여하는 ‘원리의 실체화(reification)’ 오류를 범한다. 결론적으로 실체 변화의 연속성을 해명하려는 수정주의적 기획의 전면적 실패는 역설적이게도 ‘무로부터의 생성’이라는 파르메니데스적 난제를 피하기 위해 제일질료의 실재론적 복권이 불가피함을 방증한다.
