The Narrative Rules of “Modernity” in North Korea's Historiography of Korean Philosophy and Their Methodological Implications
This article examines how the category of “modernity” (kŭndae) operates in North Korea’s historiography of Korean philosophy through three principles-criterion, rupture, and succession-and how these principles ultimately construct a teleological narrative of the history of philosophy. In the Chosŏn ch'ŏrhak chŏnsa(Complete History of Korean Philosophy, 15 vols.), which represents the collective scholarship of North Korean philosophical circles, modernity functions not as a mere periodizing marker but as a normative apparatus that selects, arranges, and evaluates individual currents of thought. Specifically, the principle of criterion judges the progressiveness and limitations of each body of thought against the standards of anti-aggression, anti-feudalism, and the restoration of national sovereignty; the principle of rupture grades the degree of modernity according to the extent of departure from Confucian Neo- Confucianism; and the principle of succession weaves a developmental genealogy running from Sirhak (Practical Learning) through Kaehwa (Enlightenment) thought to the Patriotic Cultural Enlightenment Movement. These three principles operate in preliminary form in the treatment of Sirhak in volume 6, are formalized in volume 7 as explicit narrative rules that hierarchize Tonghak, the Wijŏng ch’ŏksa (Defending Orthodoxy, Rejecting Heterodoxy) doctrine, and Kaehwa thought, and are extended in volume 8 to the level of organized practice through the conjunction of people’s rights (minkwŏn) and national sovereignty (kukkwŏn). The stadial narrative produced by the interlocking of these principles, however, is invariably accompanied by a dual evaluation-the affirmation of progressiveness and the designation of limitations-whereby the limitations assigned to each stage constitute a narrative device retroactively required to legitimize the emergence of Juche ideology as a historical necessity. This analysis nonetheless yields significant methodological insights for the study of the history of modern Korean philosophy: a methodological self-awareness that constructs modernity as a normative category, an open mode of genealogization that resists convergence upon a single teleology, and a critical reexamination of the articulation between people’s rights and national sovereignty. Elucidating the narrative rules of North Korea's historiography of Korean philosophy thus serves as a point of departure for envisioning an integrative model of philosophical historiography capable of viewing the philosophies of the divided Koreas within a single horizon.
