This study examines the structures through which locality in the Honam region was produced around Hoejae Park Gwang-ok (1526–1593), a scholar-official of mid-Joseon Korea, by attending to three interrelated dimensions: relations, space, and memory. Whereas previous scholarship has primarily focused on Park’s activities in the righteous-army movement or his Confucian thought, this study investigates the social and spatial conditions that enabled such activities, together with the mnemonic structures through which his historical image was transmitted and reconfigured. It first analyzes the kinship networks forged through marriage alliances by the Eumseong Park lineage in sixteenth-century Honam. Based in Gwangju, Park’s family developed an extensive marital network connecting local elite families in Naju, Damyang, Haenam, and surrounding areas. Extending beyond ties of consanguinity and affinity, this network constituted a social infrastructure through which knowledge, power, and memory were organized. After Park’s death, it also provided the conditions for the transmission of texts and memories concerning his life. The study next considers how Park’s interpersonal networks were spatially materialized in Gaesan and across the Yeongsan River basin. Gaesan, Park’s birthplace and a site of Confucian practice, was constituted as a “space of origins,” while his marital networks configured the wider river basin as a relational sphere of life. Space, from this perspective, was not merely a pre-given geographical setting but also a historical product of social relations. Finally, this study traces the reconfiguration of Park’s memory through the compilation of theHoejae-jipand the commemorative politics of King Jeongjo’s reign. In particular, it argues that the absence of a legitimate eldest son and the consequent transmission of Park’s records through his maternal descendants rendered the anthology a product of selective remembrance. Moreover, amid state-sponsored commemorative initiatives in the late eighteenth century, Park was redefined as an embodiment ofui(righteousness) and politically recontextualized as an emblem of loyal integrity. This study concludes that although Park was a historical person, the figure through which he became historically intelligible was produced and reconstituted through the interplay of relations, space, and memory. On this basis, the study proposes the “production of locality” as a conceptual framework for analyzing how locality-based intellectual formationsemerged and were transmitted in Joseon Korea.

본 연구는 회재 박광옥(1526–1593)을 중심으로 호남 지역 로컬리티가 어떠한 구조 속에서 생산되었는지를 관계･공간･기억의 세 차원에서 분석하는데 목적이 있다. 기존 연구가 박광옥의 의병 활동이나 도학적 사유와 같은 개인의 행적과 사상에 주목해 왔다면, 본 연구는 그러한 활동이 가능했던 사회적･공간적 조건과 기억의 구조를 해명하고자 한다. 이를 위해 먼저 16세기 호남에서 음성박씨 가계가 혼맥을 통해 구축한 관계망을 분석하였다. 박광옥의 가문은 광주를 거점으로 나주･담양･해남 등지의 사족과 연결되는 혼인 네트워크를 형성하였으며, 이는 혈연적 결합을 넘어 지역 사회의 지식･권력･기억을 조직하는 기반으로 작동하였다. 이러한 관계망은 박광옥의 사후에도 문헌과 기억의 전승을 가능하게 하는 사회적 조건이 되었다. 다음으로 박광옥의 인적 관계망이 ‘개산’과 영산강 유역이라는 공간 속에서 어떻게 구현되었는지를 고찰하였다. 개산은 박광옥의 출생지이자 도학적 실천이 이루어진 ‘기원적 공간’으로 장소화되었으며, 그의 혼맥은 영산강 유역 전반을 하나의 관계적 생활권으로 구성하였다. 이 점에서 공간은 주어진 지리적 조건만이 아니라 사회적 관계에 의해 생산된 결과이기도 하였다. 마지막으로 박광옥에 관한 기억이 󰡔회재유집󰡕의 편찬과 정조대의 추숭 과정을 거치며 어떻게 재편되었는지를 분석하였다. 특히 적장자의 부재로 인해 박광옥의 기록이 외손 계열에 의해 전승된 점에 주목하여, 그의 문집이 ‘선택적 기억의 산물’로 재구성되었음을 밝혔다. 나아가 18세기 후반 국가 주도의 추숭 과정에서 박광옥은 ‘의(義)’의 상징으로 재정의되었고, 정치적으로 절의의 상징으로 재맥락화되었다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 회재 박광옥이 실존했던 인물이지만, 관계･공간･기억의 상호작용 속에서 역사적으로 생산되고 재구성된 인물이었다는 점에 주목하였다. 논자는 이를 통해 박광옥과 같은 조선시대 ‘지역지성’의 형성과 전승을 설명하는 개념으로 ‘로컬리티의 생산’을 제안한다.
