As the use of generative AI expands rapidly in university education, understanding why users may hesitate or resist using such technologies has become increasingly important. This study explores the factors influencing university students’ resistance to generative AI use and empirically examines their effects from technological, psychological, and social-ethical perspectives. An exploratory survey was first conducted with 283 university students who had experience using generative AI. Through content analysis of their open-ended responses, seven key factors were identified: lack of information reliability and limitation in response relevance as technological risk factors; anthropomorphism, technology dependence risk, and AI anxiety as psychological resistance factors; and security risk and ethical risk as social-ethical risk factors. Based on these findings, a second survey was conducted with 339 university students, and the proposed relationships were tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The results showed that five of the seven hypothesized factors significantly influenced resistance to generative AI use. Lack of information reliability had the strongest positive effect, followed by limitation in response relevance, ethical risk, AI anxiety, and anthropomorphism. In contrast, technology dependence risk and security risk did not have statistically significant effects on resistance. These findings indicate that students’ resistance to generative AI is shaped not by a single factor but by a combination of concerns regarding the reliability and quality of AI-generated information, psychological perceptions, and broader social and ethical issues. The findings suggest that promoting the sustained use of generative AI in higher education requires more than improving technological convenience and functionality. Greater attention should be given to the reliability and quality of AI-generated outputs, while AI literacy education should be strengthened to help students critically evaluate and responsibly use AI-generated information. In addition, clear institutional guidelines and educational frameworks addressing copyright infringement, misinformation, deepfakes, and other ethical issues are needed. This study contributes to generative AI research by extending the focus beyond technology acceptance and use intention to the perspective of user resistance.
