The Effects of Price Discount Levels on Perceived Transaction Value and Purchase Intention - The Mediating Role of Perceived Transaction Value -
This study aimed to investigate the effects of price promotion conditions (0%, 15%, 30%, 45%, and 55%) on consumers' transaction value and purchase intention, while empirically verifying the mediating role of transaction value in this process. To achieve this, a between-subjects online experiment was conducted with 200 consumers evaluating dining products. The empirical findings are as follows: First, price promotion conditions had a significant effect on transaction value. While no statistically significant difference in transaction value was observed at the 15% discount level compared to the control group (0%), transaction value was significantly higher in conditions with a discount of 30% or more. Rather than definitively establishing 30% as an absolute threshold, this suggests that under the specific experimental conditions of this study, a discount of at least 30% was required to significantly stimulate consumers' perceived transaction value. Second, perceived transaction value exerted a significant positive effect on purchase intention. Third, the bootstrapping mediation analysis confirmed a statistically significant indirect effect of transaction value. This demonstrates that consumers make purchase decisions based on the transaction value formed through the promotion, rather than responding directly to the discount label itself. This study holds theoretical and practical significance by extending price promotion research into the dimension of discount intensity and clarifying transaction value as a core psychological mechanism, thereby highlighting the necessity of strategic promotion design. However, given the limitations of relying on self-reported measurements based on a single product category and hypothetical scenarios, the findings should be interpreted with caution within a conditional scope rather than generalized as an optimal discount rate.
