Modern nail art has developed beyond the field of beauty into an area of artistic creation and visual culture, expanding the possibilities for new formative expression through the integration of various artistic theories. This study aimed to apply the concept of simulation, which breaks down the boundary between the original and reproduction, to nail art design and to examine its potential for creative design development and artistic and formative expression. For this purpose, seven expressive types of simulation were identified: representation, imitation, transformation, expansion, absence, ambiguity, and hybridity. Based on these characteristics, a total of seven nail art works were created using two-dimensional and three-dimensional techniques. The results showed that transformation and hybridity were expressed through two-dimensional compositions focusing on the transformation and combination of colors and forms, while representation and imitation were expressed by three-dimensionally embodying the forms and distinctive characteristics of the subjects. Expansion was represented by extending forms beyond the surface of the nail into three-dimensional space, whereas absence was expressed through the omission or emptying of certain parts of the subject to create meaning. Ambiguity was expressed by blurring the boundaries between forms and images, thereby allowing for multiple interpretations. Accordingly, two two-dimensional works applying transformation and hybridity and five three-dimensional works applying representation, imitation, expansion, absence, and ambiguity were created. These works demonstrated that different formative expressions could be achieved according to each expressive type, including the transformation and combination of forms, three-dimensional construction, spatial expansion, omission and emptiness, and the blurring of boundaries. These findings indicate that the expressive types of simulation can contribute to the formative diversity of nail art and the development of creative designs. This study is significant in that it provides foundational data for the development of nail art designs applying simulation and for further related research.
