민화의 화조도를 활용한 디지털 패브리케이션(Digital Fabrication) 기반 네일 디자인 개발
Development of Nail Designs Based on Korean Minhwa Bird-and-Flower Paintings Using Digital Fabrication
This study aimed to analyze the formative characteristics and symbolism of hwajodo (bird-and-flower paintings), a traditional Korean painting genre of minhwa (Korean folk paintings), and reinterpret them as contemporary nail designs by combining them with digital fabrication technology using a 3D printer (Bambu Lab A1 Combo). The concept and characteristics, formative elements, and symbolism of hwajodo were examined, along with the applicability of digital fabrication to nail design. Seven hwajodo paintings were selected for the study, and the forms, colors, lines, compositions, and symbolic meanings of the flowers and birds depicted in each work were analyzed. Based on the analysis results, key formative elements were extracted and reconstructed into nail designs, followed by 3D modeling using Blender 5.1 and slicing with BambuStudio. The resulting three-dimensional nail parts were fabricated using the Bambu Lab A1 Combo. After post-processing, the parts were applied to nail designs. The findings suggest that hwajodo, with its vivid colors, symbolic meanings of wealth, longevity, and harmony, and decorative forms, has can be applied to contemporary nail design as a material for contemporary nail design. In particular, implementing elements of traditional paintings as three-dimensional parts demonstrated that their symbolism could be emphasized and that the parts could be effectively adjusted in size and shape and reproduced repeatedly. This approach is significant in that it combines the formative value of traditional culture with digital technology, expands traditional cultural elements into the field of contemporary nail design, and suggests the possibility of developing differentiated Korean-style nail art content. However, as this study was limited to a small number of works and focused mainly on the analysis and production of artworks, future studies should expand the range of traditional painting materials, 3D printing materials, and production conditions.
