This study examines the ethical legitimacy of artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted officiating technologies introduced to address officiating errors made by sports referees, with a particular focus on fairness and accountability. To this end, a critical review was conducted of domestic and international scholarly literature on sports referees, officiating technologies, AI ethics, and sports ethics. The findings indicate that officiating errors should be understood by distinguishing errors in decision outcomes from the moral responsibility of sports referees. Accordingly, it is inappropriate to attribute every incorrect decision to the unethical conduct of an individual referee. Although AI-assisted officiating can compensate for the cognitive limitations of human referees and improve the accuracy and consistency of decisions, technical accuracy does not necessarily guarantee ethical fairness. Furthermore, while AI systems may reduce human bias, they may also generate new forms of bias embedded in data and algorithms, opacity in decision-making processes, and ambiguity in the attribution of responsibility. Therefore, the expansion of AI-assisted officiating should not eliminate the responsibility of human referees but instead reconfigure it as the responsibility to review and supervise technology-generated outcomes and justify final decisions. Accordingly, this study proposes accuracy, fairness, explainability, opportunities for appeal and correction, and accountability commensurate with decision-making authority as essential conditions for the ethical legitimacy of AI-assisted officiating. In conclusion, the ethical legitimacy of AI-assisted officiating can be secured by establishing a complementary human–AI officiating system that distinguishes factual judgments that may be delegated to technology from normative judgments that require human deliberation, while clearly allocating decision-making authority and responsibility.
