Exploring the Development Process of a Taekwondo-Based Inclusive eXercise Program (TKIX) Applying Psychomotor Theory : A Pilot Study of Adults with Mild Developmental Disabilities
The purpose of this study was to develop a Taekwondo-Based Inclusive eXercise Program (TKIX) for adults with mild developmental disabilities based on psychomotor theory and to explore its field applicability and elements requiring revision through the implementation of a pilot program. To achieve this purpose, the ADDIE model and the Dick and Carey model were integrated to develop the final TKIX program through research analysis, needs analysis, pilot program implementation, and program revision. The pilot program was conducted over four sessions with seven adults with mild developmental disabilities. Data were collected through participant observation, field notes, in-depth interviews, and expert consultation, and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The findings were as follows. First, the design principles of the TKIX program were identified as experience-centeredness, functionality, structuredness, repeatability, and interaction. Second, the core design requirements included task design tailored to participants' functional levels, visually structured and repetitive class operation, and functional task design utilizing fundamental Taekwondo movements. Third, the pilot program identified the simplification and sequencing of complex tasks, a predictable instructional structure supported by visual materials, and the integration of fundamental Taekwondo movements with functional activation tasks as major elements requiring revision and refinement. Fourth, based on the findings from the research analysis, needs analysis, and pilot implementation, the final TKIX program was developed as a 12-session program conducted once a week for 50 minutes per session. In conclusion, TKIX integrates the physical, material, and social experiences emphasized in psychomotor theory with the functional movements of Taekwondo to support participants' functional improvement and sustained engagement in physical activity. This study is meaningful in that it presents the development process and design principles of a Taekwondo-based inclusive exercise program and provides foundational data for developing programs applicable to disability Taekwondo and adapted physical education settings.
