This study aims to systematically analyze the musical characteristics of Jinju Ilsori, a representative folk music tradition transmitted centering on the Jinju region in Gyeongsangnam-do, at the individual musical piece level. To this end, Jinju Ilsori was broadly categorized into rice-farming songs (nongnongsa sori) and women's work songs (anakne ilsori), comprehensively examining the lyrics, scales, singing structures, cadence types, rhythms, and tempos of each piece. The research findings confirm that Jinju Ilsori possesses distinct musical organizational principles depending on the nature of the labor, the performers, and the transmission environment. First, the rice-farming songs (such as rice seedling pulling songs, rice transplanting songs, weeding songs, and chingchingi songs) are primarily based on four-note scales (Mi-La-Do-Re or Mi-La-Si-Do), closely connecting with the Menari-jo sensibility typical of the Gyeongsang and Jeolla provincial folk music regions. In terms of singing structure, the pulling and transplanting songs center around a recitation-style folk song form (eumyeonghyeongshik), while weeding and chingchingi songs exhibit a strophic form with call-and-response structures. The rhythms for pulling and transplanting flexibly utilize asymmetric meter structures (such as 3+5+3+5 beats), whereas weeding and chingchingi employ a regular 4/4 meter, strongly manifesting functional characteristics that coordinate the rhythm and breathing of collective labor. Second, the women's work songs (such as field weeding, herb gathering, hemp spinning, thread reeling, and sewing songs) center around sol-scales and mi-scales, displaying relatively stable and regular melodic progressions. While strophic forms predominate, the hemp spinning song appears as a recitation-style folk song, and the thread reeling song manifests as a Noraetgarak style, demonstrating formal diversity. The rhythms are predominantly fixed around a 6/8 meter (12/8 Gutgeori rhythm), focusing on musically embodying the sustainability of individual labor and everyday emotions rather than coordinating collective work movements. Notably, the Noraetgarak style identified in the thread reeling song is interpreted as the result of reflecting both widely circulated popular folk song patterns and the individual musical experiences of the singer, alongside regional traditional styles. In summary, Jinju Ilsori is not a singular musical style, but rather a complex folk song system flexibly organized according to the nature of labor and the transmission environment. By concretely clarifying the musical identity and regional characteristics of Jinju Ilsori at the individual piece level, this study holds significance in providing foundational academic data for future research, transmission, preservation, and education concerning regional folk music.
