This study analyzes the performativity of women’s labor and bodily representation in the 2021 MODAFE performance of Nam Jeong-ho’s Laundry. It employs Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity as its main framework and Korean feminist discussions of women’s labor as sociocultural context, combining literature review and performance analysis. The repetitive washing movements embody domestic labor and gender norms imposed on women. The drum-shaped laundry-tub object transforms labor into rhythm and play, while undressing and upper-body exposure reveal norms of chastity and reposition the female body as a sensing and relational subject. Women’s collective actions further transform isolated labor into communal rhythm and mutual care. Thus, Laundry visualizes gender norms through repetitive performance and suggests the possibility of their disruption.
