This paper specifically examines the current state of ancient archives that have been scattered after leaving their original storage locations at some point in the past, through the case of ancient archives passed down within the main branch of the Haeju Oh clan’s Jeongmugong branch and the descendants of Oh Tae-ju, a royal son-in-law (Myeongan Princess’s household), during the late Joseon Dynasty. Based on this, the paper raises the necessity for researchers and institutions holding these materials to make efforts to describe their sources and proposes a method for doing so.
Among the ancient archives currently identified through various repositories, there are many cases where information is extracted and meaning is attributed based primarily on the superficial characteristics of the materials, as they have been scattered after leaving their original repositories. If compilers or researchers were to make greater efforts to verify the evidence regarding the original repositories and describe the information, a deeper understanding and research of the ancient archives could be achieved, and furthermore, it would be possible to attempt to reconstruct the scale and appearance of the original repositories based on a specific point in the past.
