From Individual Happiness to Community Well-Being : Linking YouTube Discourse to an Agent-Based Simulation
Digital video platforms circulate abundant advice about happiness and well-being, but the frame composition of that advice may not address the relational and place-based conditions included in community well-being (CWB). This study develops an exploratory text-to-simulation design to examine, under explicitly specified behavioural assumptions, how alternative discourse compositions generate different municipal CWB trajectories. Two hundred YouTube videos retrieved with the keywords happiness and well-being between May 2025 and April 2026 were analysed in NetMiner using keyword centrality, Pathfinder networks, and clustering. Four empirical frames were reconstructed: emotional happiness (F1); health and lifestyle well-being (F2); relationships, family, and local space (F3); and community and environment (F4). Their observed distributions were converted into message-occurrence probabilities in a NetLogo model of 1,000 heterogeneous residents embedded in a social network. Four discourse scenarios were simulated over 100 ticks with 200 replications each. Within the baseline parameterisation, happiness-centred discourse generated the highest individual happiness (H = 0.684), whereas well-being-centred discourse generated the highest individual well-being (W = 0.681). Neither generated the highest composite CWB. The highest CWB (0.582) occurred in a normative scenario that increased F3 and F4, because the model assigned these frames broader effects on social trust, local connectedness, and perceived local living conditions. These results are conditional computational findings rather than estimates of real-world platform effects. The study contributes a transparent workflow for converting observed discourse structures into testable simulation scenarios and derives hypotheses for local-government communication that require empirical validation.
