Patterns of Generative AI Use and Factors Explaining Frequency of Use among Graduate Students at a University of Education : A Case Study of G University of Education
This study examined how graduate students at a university of education use generative AI in their academic and research activities and which factors explain their frequency of use. A self-report online survey was administered in November 2025 to 148 master's and doctoral students at the graduate school of G University of Education in the Seoul metropolitan area; responses from the 138 students with prior experience of generative AI were analyzed. One-way ANOVA, ANCOVA, the Friedman test, and hierarchical regression analysis were applied. The findings are as follows. First, ChatGPT was the most frequently used tool in both domains, whereas tools specialized for scholarly work were used by only 15.9% and 12.3% of respondents in the academic and research domains; by activity, sentence and grammar editing ranked highest in both domains, while the lowest was preparing for certification examinations in the academic domain and formulating research questions in the research domain. Second, a hierarchy of frequency of use < user satisfaction < perceived usefulness was consistently observed in both domains, showing that general judgements of usefulness stood higher than respondents' own reported use in their academic and research activities. Third, frequency of use was explained by perceived usefulness and by everyday use of generative AI, and this held after controlling for the number and type of tools used. AI education experience and academic major were significantly associated in simple correlations and group comparisons, with those reporting four or more cumulative AI training experiences scoring consistently higher on perceived usefulness and user satisfaction than those reporting none or one; once perceived usefulness was entered, however, neither showed a direct effect on frequency of use, indicating that they were linked to use through perceived usefulness. Fourth, the difficulty most often reported was concern over academic and research ethics and the support most often requested was access to paid AI tools; for ethical concerns and cost burden, reported difficulties and requested support corresponded at the individual level.
