The Principle of Knowledge Organization in the Anatomical Plates of De Humani Corporis Fabrica : Renaissance Humanism and the Organization of Visual Knowledge
This study analyzes the anatomical plates in Andreas Vesalius’s De humani corporis fabrica libri septem (1543) not merely as illustrations, but as a visual system of knowledge organized to enable the identification and comparison of anatomical structures. To this end, it proposes the concept of the “principles of knowledge organization in anatomical plates” and examines pictorial composition, the correspondence between text and image, cross-references between the text and plates, and the arrangement and editorial structure of sequential plates. First, by comparing the anatomical illustrations of Jacopo Berengario da Carpi, Johannes Dryander, and Charles Estienne, this study demonstrates that such features as letter labels, multiple viewpoints, sequential representations, and pictorial settings were not Vesalius’s original inventions. The distinctiveness of the Fabrica lay instead in its integration of these pre-existing elements into a broad and sustained system linking letter labels, plates, explanatory captions, the main text, and sequential images. This editorial structure is examined in relation to humanist textual culture, while bodily proportions and postures, viewpoints, and spatial composition are analyzed within the broader context of Renaissance visual culture. The analysis shows that the skeletal plates enabled spatial comparison through different viewpoints, the muscle plates facilitated comparison between successive anatomical layers as tissues were removed, and the brain plates allowed comparison between successive stages of dissection. In particular, the cross-referencing of letter labels and text, together with the arrangement of sequential plates, created visual and textual conditions that allowed anatomical structures to be repeatedly identified and compared across different viewpoints and stages of dissection. This study therefore locates the historical significance of the Fabrica not in the priority or original invention of individual visual techniques, but in its integration and reorganization of visual and textual elements already present in early sixteenth-century anatomy into a coherent system of anatomical knowledge. In this respect, the anatomical plates of the Fabrica can be reinterpreted not simply as representations of knowledge, but as a visual and textual system that made the identification, comparison, and cross-referencing of anatomical structures possible.
