This paper provides an outline of the court sommeliers , gardes , and valets who made possible the cultural efflorescence of the late fifteenth-century Burgundian court. Since Johan Huizinga’s classic The Waning of the Middle Ages , the Burgundian court has been understood as the final blooming of medieval chivalric culture, while recent scholarship has emphasized its close interactions and balanced tensions with the urban societies of the Low Countries. However, there remains a lack of understanding regarding the concrete mechanisms behind the splendor and magnificence of the Burgundian court. By examining the surviving accounts of court expenditures, together with other financial documents, court correspondences, and literary sources, this paper traces and analyzes the relationships among the group of court officers who were in charge of procuring and managing the court's material culture. Through low-ranking officials positioned within the ducal chamber (chambre du duc ), the court acquired and maintained the vast quantities of exquisite clothing, magnificent tapestries, luxury jewelry, precious metalwork, and various artworks it required. The premier sommelier, such as Jehan Le Tourneur, was in charge of acquiring textiles, especially liveries for the court, and in charge of overseeing ducal operations as a whole, while gardes. such as Garnot Pourcleot, were in charge of the procurement and maintenance of major movable assets, such as tapestries and jewelry. Meanwhile, ducal valets, often urban artisans residing in disparate cities, provisioned and supervised by the sommeliers and gardes, handled the production, upkeep, and repair of the material culture of the court. These individuals were primarily of mercantile background and often commoners. After entering court service, they consolidated their transactions through marriage alliances, forming a cohesive group of courtiers under the duke’s chamber that managed the business of the Burgundian court and realized its magnificence. Thus, it was these duke’s businessmen who realized the splendid medieval aristocratic culture of the Burgundian court, by engaging and harnessing the budding modern urban commerce of the Low Countries.
