A Textual Analysis of Stories of Temptation Related to Confession in Caesarius of Heisterbach’s Dialogus miraculorum
The virtue of chastity, which safeguards the proper order of human sexuality, has long been regarded as one of the fundamental virtues in Christian society. Medieval Western society also praised this virtue and transmitted numerous stories that upheld and defended chastity. Due to its vast number, this study focuses on Caesarius of Heisterbach's Dialogus miraculorum in various medieval works, examining in particular the stories of temptation associated with the sacrament of confession. To this end, the critical edition published in Fontes Christiani serves as the primary text, while the writings of four Dominican authors who recount similar stories are used for comparison. Through this comparative analysis, the distinctive characteristics and significance of Caesarius's narrative are explored. Founded by Saint Robert of Molesme and numbering Saint Bernard of Clairvaux among its most distinguished members, the Cistercian Order exerted a profound influence on medieval Western society. Among its contributions was the compilation and collection of exempla , exemplary narratives intended to provide moral models for imitation. Caesarius's Dialogus miraculorum belongs to this literary tradition and includes the story of a nobleman's personal chaplain's temptation. Although it consists of only 19 lines and 384 words, this narrative displays distinctive features that set it apart from comparable accounts preserved in the Dominican tradition. Reflecting his Cistercian background, Caesarius employs expressions that echo Saint Benedict's account of sexual temptation while also emphasizing the importance of the community and the responsibilities of its leader. Furthermore, beyond relying on information he had personally collected, he distinguishes his account from other traditions through the use of more vivid and emotionally evocative language. Although Caesarius's account was recorded during the same period as the Libellus , it differs in several details from both the Libellus and the traditions subsequently transmitted within the Dominican Order. By adding his own distinctive literary and theological perspective to a widely circulated story of temptation, Caesarius not only enhances the significance of the narrative itself but also invites contemporary readers to overcome temptation and pursue the virtue of chastity.
