Faculty Career Guidance for Promoting University Students’ Career Preparation Behavior : Effects of Internship Experience and Faculty Support and the Mediating Role of Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy
The purpose of this study was to explore effective faculty-based career guidance strategies for promoting university students’ career preparation behavior. The study examined the effects of internship experience and faculty support on career preparation behavior, as well as the mediating effect of career decision-making self-efficacy in the relationship between faculty support and students’ career preparation behavior. A survey was conducted with students at three universities in the Seoul metropolitan area. Of the 300 questionnaires distributed, 264 valid responses were collected and analyzed using independent-samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA, multiple regression analysis, and Baron and Kenny’s(1986) three-step mediation procedure. The results were as follows. First, male students and upper-year students reported higher levels of career preparation behavior than female students and lower-year students, respectively. Second, internship experience had a significant positive effect on all dimensions of career preparation behavior, whereas emotional support provided by faculty members significantly predicted overall career preparation behavior, and informational support significantly predicted some subdimensions. Third, career decision-making self-efficacy partially mediated the relationship between faculty support and career preparation behavior. These findings suggest that faculty career guidance should go beyond providing employment information by connecting practical career experiences, such as internships, with career exploration and career development while strengthening students’ confidence in career decision-making. This study contributes to the literature by examining internship experience and faculty support simultaneously and by distinguishing between emotional and informational support, thereby providing practical implications for faculty career guidance in higher education.
