Analysis of Types and Characteristics of Employment Support Needs of Unemployed University Graduates : Focusing on Participants in Employment Services Customized for Graduated Students
As the labor market transition of university graduates is increasingly delayed and periods of unemployment grow longer, existing employment support services have largely treated unemployed graduates as a homogeneous group, failing to adequately reflect the differing needs of first-time job seekers and those preparing for re-employment. This study aims to categorize unemployed university graduates based on their employment support needs and analyze their characteristics and influencing factors, thereby offering practical implications for user-centered employment services. To this end, using the survey data from 631 participants in the 2024 Employment Services Customized for Graduated Students, a Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) was conducted based on their preferences for various employment support programs. As a result of the analysis, unemployed university graduates could be categorized into four types: work experience seeking type(Group 1), job search skill focused type(Group 2), career exploring type(Group 3), and re-employment preparing type(Group 4). Group 1 and Group 2 were mainly composed of first-time job seekers and Group 3 and 4 were characterized as re-employment seekers. The profiles exhibited significant differences in background characteristics, job search pathway, and job expectation level. Also, multinomial logistic regression analysis identified gender, university location, and pre-graduation work experience as significant predictors of these profiles. Based on these findings, this study suggests: (1)providing user-centered modular employment services, (2)strengthening career exploration supports for during lower academic years and military service, (3)offering specialized job-transition programs for re-employment seekers, and (4)providing detailed market wage information to prevent labor market mismatches and prolonged unemployment. This study holds academic and practical significance by classifying unemployed university graduates into distinct latent profiles and identifying their varying preference patterns, as well as for reflecting the heterogeneous characteristics of both first-time job seekers and those preparing for re-employment.
