Reconstructing Christian Education for Persons with Disabilities on the Basis of a Covenantal Doctrine of the Image of God
Purpose of the Study: This study examines the risk that Christian education for persons with disabilities is organized around capacity, cognition, and achievement, and seeks an alternative foundation in the Reformed doctrine of the image of God.
Research Methods: This literature-based study combines historical theology, systematic theology, and biblical exegesis with an application to Christian education. Taking developmental disability, in which cognitive response is limited, as its reference case, it reconstructs the holistic and relational accounts of the image of God in Calvin, Bavinck, and Berkouwer into an analytic category, the covenantal doctrine of the image of God, and supports this reading with an exegesis of Genesis 1 and John 9.
Research Results: The view that disability diminishes the image of God rests on an anthropology that identifies the image with human functional capacity. The Reformed tradition instead grounds the image in the relationship that God establishes prior to any human response, which removes the basis for excluding persons with disabilities from the image. Four principles follow: from capacity-centered to being-centered education, from cognitive achievement to relational faith formation, from inclusion to belonging, and from objects of care to subjects within the community of faith.
Conclusions and Suggestions: The relational understanding of the image of God is already present within the Reformed tradition and need not be imported from outside it. Churches can embody the four principles in worship, biblical instruction, the sacraments, teacher formation, peer community, and the participation of persons with disabilities themselves. Further research should develop and evaluate programs based on these principles and explore the experiences of persons with disabilities, their families, and teachers.
