In Lies of P, “becoming human” is a goal declared by no one. This paper traces how the game, in adapting Carlo Collodi’s original novel, transforms this undeclared goal into a procedural apparatus that players cannot but execute. Drawing on Rosi Braidotti’s critical posthumanism as its theoretical framework and Ian Bogost’s concept of procedural rhetoric as a methodological pivot, the study reads the game’s rules alongside the source text in a parallel manner. The discussion unfolds on three levels. First, the humanity stat and the hierarchy of the three endings install “proximity to the human” as the measure of completion, yet nowhere do they place any dialogue that explicitly argues for it. The game’s humanism is realized not through persuasion but through the singularity of the path. Second, among the actions rewarded as “humanity,” none is exclusive to the human species, and the Ergo setting already breaks through the bios/zoe dichotomy. Nevertheless, the game mechanism re‑organizes these posthuman possibilities into a unidirectional hierarchy. Third, unlike the original, where Pinocchio himself articulates his desire to become a real boy, the game contains no such declaration of desire by P. The void is filled instead by Geppetto’s regret, Sophia’s summons, and the player’s well‑intentioned manipulations. Ultimately, “becoming human” in this game is not P’s desire but a desire pre‑scripted by the procedures, and each click of the player executes that premise. Through this analysis, the paper reveals that Lies of P is a text that inadvertently renders anthropocentrism visible, critically illuminating the hidden operational logic shared by contemporary cultural imaginations of non‑human beings.
