The purpose of this paper is to argue that a pragmatic approach, which takes into account the contextual meaning of words as they are used in sentences, should be actively employed in explaining word meaning. The contextual meanings of words are closely related to the processes through which their meanings are formed, differentiated, and changed. An examination of various theories of meaning, including the referential theory, the use theory, the distributional hypothesis, and frame semantics, shows that the meanings of words can be fully understood only when they are regarded as fluid and their contextual meanings are actively taken into consideration. The paper also examines related mechanisms such as metaphor, metonymy, and the absorption of contextual meaning, and argues that these mechanisms should be applied throughout the field of lexicology, including the study of word meaning, word formation, and the acquisition of grammatical functions by words through grammaticalization.

본고의 목적은 단어의 의미에 대한 설명 방식으로 그 단어가 사용되는문장의 맥락 의미를 고려한 화용론적 접근법이 적극 활용되어야 함을주장하는 것이다. 단어 의미의 형성과 분화 그리고 변화의 과정에 있어서그 단어가 쓰인 맥락의 의미는 깊은 관련을 맺고 있다. 이를 반영한 의미이론으로 지시설, 용법설, 분포 가설, 틀 의미론 등을 검토한바, 단어 의미를 유동적인 것으로 상정하여 그 맥락 의미를 적극 고려할 때 그 단어의 의미를 온전히 파악할 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 관련한 기제로 은유, 환유, 맥락 의미의 흡수 등을 정리하였고 이러한 기제가 단어의미론, 단어형성론, 문법화에 의한 문법적 단어의 기능 획득에 대한 설명 등 어휘론의 전반에 적용되어야 함을 주장하였다.
