〈Maehwajeon〉, on the surface, takes the form of a love novel, but it does not stop at merely portraying love between a man and a woman. This work places the love between Maehwa and Yangyu at its center and indirectly exposes the social problems brought about by human greed. This paper focuses on these aspects and examines the narrative function of the love story in Maehwajeon and its stylistic features. The summary of that content is as follows. First, we examined the plot of the work and the types of characters. 〈Maehwajeon〉 has a structure consisting of Mrs. Kim’s escape, the meeting of Maehwa and Yangyu, conflict and parting, and their reunion at Guwolsan. Examining the characters’ traits, Maehwa and Yangyu are portrayed as figures who, unlike those in traditional heroic novels, experience pain and sorrow within the limitations of reality. In contrast, Mrs. Kim functions as the central figure who coordinates the course of the incident and suggests a direction for resolving the conflict, while Sergeant Jo and Mrs. Choi are portrayed as figures revealing human desire. Second, we examined the narrative function of love narratives. 〈Maehwajeon〉 places the love story of Maehwa and Yangyu at its center and critically portrays the contradictions of social reality and the crisis of community, such as the court’s discord, human greed, and the collapse of the community. In this context, through the space of Guwolsan, it also presents the possibility of restoring a new community. Third, it examined the stylistic features and narrative effects. 〈Maehwajeon〉 delicately reveals the characters’ emotions through poems of reply and letters, while its depiction of natural objects, repetitive expression, and rhythmic pansori style strengthen the reader’s emotional resonance. In this respect, 〈Maehwajeon〉 can be regarded as an independent work that combines the characteristics of a love novel and a socially critical novel.

<매화전>은 표면적으로는 애정소설의 형태를 취하고 있지만, 남녀 간의 사랑을 재현하는 데 그치지 않는다. 이 작품은 매화와 양유의 사랑을중심에 배치하고 인간의 탐욕이 불러온 사회 문제를 우회적으로 드러내고 있다. 본고에서는 이러한 점에 주목하여 <매화전>의 애정 서사의 서사적 기능과 문체적 특징에 관해 고찰해 보았다. 그 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 작품의 줄거리와 인물 유형을 살펴보았다. <매화전>은 김주부의도피, 매화와 양유의 만남, 갈등과 이별, 구월산에서의 재회라는 구조를가진다. 인물의 특성을 살펴보면, 매화와 양유는 전통적 영웅소설의 인물과 달리 현실적 한계 속에서 고통과 슬픔을 경험하는 인물로 형상화된다. 반면 김주부는 사건의 흐름을 조정하고 갈등 해결의 방향을 제시하는중심인물로 기능하며, 조병사와 최씨 부인은 인간 욕망을 보여주는 인물로 그려진다. 둘째, 애정 서사의 서사적 기능에 관해 살펴보았다. <매화전>은 매화와 양유의 애정 서사를 중심에 배치하고 조정의 불화합, 인간의 탐욕, 공동체의 붕괴와 같은 사회 현실의 모순과 공동체의 위기를 비판적으로형상화하고 있다. 그러한 가운데 구월산이라는 공간을 통해 새로운 공동체의 회복 가능성을 함께 제시하고 있다. 셋째, 문체적 특징과 서사 효과에 관해 살펴보았다. <매화전>은 화답시와 편지글을 활용하여 인물의 감정을 섬세하게 드러내고 있으며, 자연물 묘사와 반복적 표현과 리듬감 있는 판소리 문체는 독자의 정서적 공감을 강화하고 있다. 이러한 점에서 <매화전>은 애정소설과 사회비판소설의 성격을 가진 독자적 작품으로 평가할 수 있다.
