The Language of Hwang Ji-u’s Poetry and the Semiotic Structure of Contemporary Media Sensibility - Focusing on the Structural Affinity Between Advertising Language and the Language of Social Media Sensibility
This study focuses on the phenomenon-emerging amidst the proliferation of digital platforms-whereby emotions surface as images, short texts, and reactions rather than being understood through language; it aims to analyze the structural characteristics of the “digital language of emotion” shaped by these changes. In today’s environments defined by social media, Instagram captions, and algorithm-driven communication, emotions function not as subjects of interpretation or narrative, but as semiotic surfaces that are instantly perceived, categorized, and consumed. This study distinguishes itself from existing research by viewing these shifts in the language of emotion not merely as a media phenomenon, but as a structural transformation in the way signs operate. To this end, adopting Roland Barthes’s semiotics and Jean Baudrillard’s concept of the simulacrum as a theoretical framework, this study examined how signs in the digital environment operate by prioritizing sensory effects and surface-level perception over depth of meaning. Based on this theoretical discussion, the study comprehensively analyzed the aesthetic position occupied by the linguistic experiments in Hwang Ji-u’s poetry within the context of the structural affinity between advertising language and the language of digital sensibility. The findings derived from a detailed analysis of the works are as follows. First, in “Spraying F-Killer,” “Silent Tribute: 5 Minutes and 27 Seconds,” and “For the Days Without an Answer,” the study examined how the imperative tone, repetitive slogans, and fragmented imagery characteristic of advertising language are transformed into critical semiotic devices that reveal social violence and structures of feeling, rather than the logic of commercial consumption. Second, in “While Waiting for You,” “40-1,” and “I Am You,” it was demonstrated that while short-sentence rhythms and direct forms of address bear structural similarities to media-style sentence patterns, they are reconstructed as poetic signs that prompt reflection on the temporality of relationships and the process of existential becoming, rather than facilitating the immediate consumption of emotion. Third, in “The Bird Leaving Home,” “On the Mountain at Dawn After the Rain,” and “Nostalgia,” the study analyzed an affective structure in which emotions are presented on a semiotic surface without being internalized-a process achieved through the erasure of traces, emptiness, the arrangement of images, and the shifting of space. In these poems, emotion does not accumulate or resolve but appears as a form of non-accumulative affect that emerges and vanishes in an instant; likewise, the subject is constituted not as a fixed interiority but as a semiotic position that moves and undergoes displacement. In summary, Hwang Ji-u’s poetry is not merely a passive reflection of the forms of digital emotive language; rather, it is an active poetic text that explores the semiotization and externalization of emotion, transforming them into a realm of ontological reflection. Through this analysis, the study demonstrates that poetry can function as a semiotic system capable of critically reconstructing emotion, identity, and the perception of reality, even within the affective structures of the digital environment.
