The Effects of Violence Victimization among Local Police Officers during Intoxicated-Person Encounters on Operational Stress : The Mediating Role of PTSD Experience
This study aims to examine the effect of violence victimization experienced by police officers while handling intoxicated persons on operational stress in the field, and to empirically verify whether cognitive experience of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) mediates this relationship. For this purpose, survey data collected from police officers working in Seoul were analyzed. The independent variable, violence victimization during the handling of intoxicated persons, was operationally defined as having experienced either insult-related victimization or obstruction of official duties. The mediating variable was whether respondents perceived themselves as having experienced PTSD as a result of handling intoxicated persons, and the dependent variable was operational stress, measured as the sum of eight items specifically designed to capture stress arising from intoxicated-person incidents in the field. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and generalized structural equation modeling (GSEM)—which allows simultaneous estimation of a binary mediating variable and a continuous dependent variable—were employed as the analytic methods. The results showed that violence victimization significantly increased the likelihood of PTSD experience, and PTSD experience, in turn, significantly increased operational stress. The total effect of violence victimization on operational stress was also statistically significant. A closer examination revealed that the direct effect of violence victimization on operational stress was not statistically significant, whereas the indirect effect via perceived PTSD experience was significant. The results demonstrate that the relationship between violence victimization and operational stress is statistically explained through the indirect pathway mediated by perceived PTSD experience, while the direct pathway not passing through PTSD could not be confirmed in the present data. Based on these findings, the conclusion presents practical implications and directions for future research. This study is meaningful in that it empirically verifies the structural relationships among community police officers' violence victimization by intoxicated persons, perceived PTSD experience, and operational stress within the specific occupational context of handling intoxicated persons.
