The Effects of Lighting Correlated Color Temperature and Encoding-Retrieval Match on Eyewitness Facial Identification Performance
This study examined the effects of correlated color temperature (CCT) during the encoding and retrieval stages, as well as the match in lighting color between the two stages, on eyewitness facial identification accuracy. Differences in lighting color under nighttime street-lighting conditions were manipulated using two CCT levels. Forty adults aged 18 years or older residing in South Korea—16 men and 24 women—participated in a 2 (encoding CCT: 5000 K vs. 2000 K) × 2 (retrieval CCT: 5000 K vs. 2000 K) within-subjects design. Facial identification accuracy was measured using discriminability derived from signal detection theory. The data were analyzed using a two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance and generalized estimating equations (GEE) logistic regression. The results showed that the main effect of encoding CCT was not significant, whereas the main effect of retrieval CCT was significant. Participants demonstrated greater facial discriminability when retrieval occurred under the 5000 K condition than under the 2000 K condition. A significant interaction between encoding CCT and retrieval CCT was also observed. Facial discriminability was higher when both encoding and retrieval occurred under the 5000 K condition than under either of the two mismatched conditions. In contrast, when both encoding and retrieval occurred under the 2000 K condition, performance did not differ significantly from that observed in the mismatched conditions. The GEE logistic regression analysis of trial-level response accuracy revealed a similar interaction pattern. These findings indicate that a match in lighting color between encoding and retrieval does not provide an equivalent advantage across all lighting conditions. Rather, facial identification performance may be associated not only with the match in lighting context but also with the characteristics of the visual information afforded by each lighting condition. This study is significant in that it experimentally examined the effects of lighting color on eyewitness facial identification by manipulating CCT levels. The findings further suggest that investigative procedures should consider both the lighting conditions present during the witnessed event and the lighting environment in which the subsequent identification procedure is conducted.
