The Impact of Goodwill Impairment Losses on Firm Value in Chinese Companies : The Mediating Role of ESG Activities
This study empirically examines the effect of goodwill impairment losses on firm value and investigates whether ESG activities play a mediating role in this relationship. The sample consists of 4,249 firm-year observations from 607 Chinese A-share listed companies over the period from 2015 to 2021. Firm value is measured by Tobin's Q, and ESG activities are measured using Bloomberg ESG data. The empirical results are as follows. First, goodwill impairment losses have a significantly negative effect on firm value. Second, ESG activities have a positive effect on firm value; among the subcomponents, environmental activities and social responsibility activities show significantly positive effects, whereas the effect of governance activities is not statistically significant. Third, goodwill impairment losses have a negative effect on overall ESG activities, environmental activities, and social responsibility activities, while their effect on governance activities is not statistically significant. This finding suggests that, for firms recognizing goodwill impairment losses, the resource-constraint effect arising from weakened financial capacity and pressure for short-term performance recovery outweighs any incentive to expand ESG activities as a means of reputation repair. Fourth, overall ESG activities, environmental activities, and social responsibility activities have a partial mediating effect on the relationship between goodwill impairment losses and firm value, whereas the mediating effect of governance activities is not confirmed. The governance results are attributable to the fact that governance requirements for Chinese listed firms are uniformly mandated by the regulatory authorities, which limits cross-sectional variation, and that disclosure-based governance indicators do not adequately capture substantive managerial control and investor protection. This study contributes to the literature by linking the value relevance of goodwill impairment losses to ESG activities as a non-financial channel. From a practical perspective, the findings suggest that firms need to manage goodwill impairment risk following mergers and acquisitions and to maintain market trust and firm value through ESG activities. From a policy perspective, the results indicate the need to enhance the transparency of goodwill impairment disclosures and improve the reliability of ESG information disclosure.
