Market Re-entry Strategy for a Japanese Medical Device Brand in Korea in Response to Complex External Environmental Changes : An International Marketing Perspective
This study examines the market re-entry strategy of a Japanese medical device brand in Korea in response to complex changes in the external environment from an international marketing perspective. The purpose of this study is to analyze the case of a foreign brand whose business activities in the Korean market declined during a period of substantial environmental change, including changes in Korea–Japan relations and the COVID-19 pandemic, and to propose practical marketing strategies for re-entering the Korean market. To this end, a case analysis was conducted based primarily on data collected through five face-to-face consulting sessions and interviews with the representative of a domestic import and distribution company during a capacity-building consulting program in 2025. The analysis identified limitations in the brand’s previous market entry approach, distribution channels, target customers, brand positioning, and marketing activities, and subsequently derived strategic alternatives for market re-entry. The case analysis suggests a re-entry strategy that moves beyond the previous distributor- and offline-centered distribution structure by combining specialized distribution channels with online sales. Rather than relying primarily on the country-of-origin image associated with a Japanese brand, the company should pursue brand localization by emphasizing the functional value of the product and actual user experience. The analysis further suggests strengthening brand trust through consumer reviews, experiential content, credible product information, and after-sales support. In the initial stage of market re-entry, test marketing should be conducted with core customer segments, followed by a gradual expansion of the target market based on consumer responses and sales performance. This study contributes to the literature by conceptualizing foreign brand market re-entry not as a simple restoration of previous distribution networks, but as an international marketing process involving the reconfiguration of distribution channels, brand localization, brand trust, and marketing communication. It also provides practical implications for small and medium-sized import and distribution firms with limited resources seeking to revitalize foreign brands in the Korean market. The proposed framework is exploratory and should be interpreted as a strategic framework derived from case evidence and prior literature rather than as an empirically validated model of re-entry success.
