The Effect of CSR Activities and Country of Origin on Purchase Intention: An Empirical study of E-commerce Fashion Platforms in South Africa
As global markets perpetually expand, corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities have become a crucial determinant of consumer purchase intentions particularly for foreign e-commerce fashion platforms. Given the competitive nature of international markets, foreign platforms often face the liability of foreignness, requiring strategic initiatives such as CSR to enhance consumer trust and engagement. This study investigates the direct effect of CSR on purchase intention in foreign e-commerce fashion platforms and explores how country-of-origin (COO) moderates this relationship. Specifically, we examine whether high CSR engagement strengthens consumer purchase intention and whether COO influences the extent to which CSR enhances purchase intent. To test these relationships, we conducted a 2 (CSR; high vs. low) x 2 (COO: domestic vs. foreign) scenario-based experimental study with 413 South African online consumers. The results, analyzed using two-way ANOVA, confirm that CSR activities positively influence purchase intention for foreign e-commerce platforms. Moreover, COO significantly moderates this effect, indicating that CSR initiatives are more effective in driving purchase intention for foreign e-commerce fashion platforms compared to domestic ones. These findings provide both theoretical contributions and managerial implications, emphasizing the strategic role of CSR in mitigating foreignness related barriers and enhancing consumer trust in foreign e-commerce fashion platforms.
