Does the Degree of Internationalization Moderate the Non-linear Relationship between R&D Investment and Firm Value?
This study empirically examines the relationship between R&D investment and firm value, focusing on an inverted U-shaped relationship?where R&D investment beyond an optimal threshold impairs firm value?and investigates whether the degree of internationalization moderates this non-linear relationship in a globalized competitive environment. To this end, a hierarchical panel regression analysis was conducted on 1,012 manufacturing firms listed on the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets from 2011 to 2025, yielding the following findings. First, an inverted U-shaped non-linear relationship between R&D investment and firm value was confirmed, indicating that while R&D investment contributes to enhancing firm value up to a certain level, it impairs firm value once it exceeds the optimal threshold. Second, the degree of internationalization, measured by the export-to-sales ratio, was found to significantly moderate the non-linear relationship between R&D investment and firm value. Specifically, as the degree of internationalization increases, the peak of the inverted U-shaped curve shifts upward and to the right, while the overall slope of the curve becomes steeper. This implies that for firms with higher R&D intensity, the positive effect of R&D investment on enhancing firm value is strengthened and the maximum valuation peak is elevated; however, once the threshold is crossed, firm value deteriorates more rapidly and severely. The findings of this study suggest that when highly internationalized firms execute R&D investments within an optimal range, they can leverage economies of scale in utilizing technological assets through geographic expansion into overseas markets beyond the domestic market. Furthermore, by dispersing the costs and risks arising from R&D investments, these firms can delay the point of diminishing marginal utility on the inverted U-shaped curve?extending it to the right?thereby reinforcing the enhancement of firm value driven by R&D investment.
