Navigating Crisis and Sustainability : How Supply Chain Resilience and Financial Structure Shape ESG Performance in Chinese Firms
Environmental, social, and governance performance has become a critical benchmark of corporate sustainability. This is particularly true in emerging economies, which experience rapid regulatory transitions and supply chain disruptions. Building on stakeholder theory and the resource-based view, this study investigates the determinants of ESG performance in Chinese firms, focusing on the roles of supply chain resilience, leverage, firm size, and the COVID-19 pandemic as a structural shock. Using panel data from 2015 to 2024 and applying fixed-effects estimation with cross-sectional weighting, the study examines the extent to which internal capabilities and financial structures shape corporate ESG outcomes. The results reveal that SCR and firm size significantly and positively influence ESG performance, suggesting that resilient operational systems and greater resource availability enhance firms’ ability to implement sustainable practices. Conversely, leverage exhibits a consistently negative relationship with ESG performance, indicating that financially constrained firms prioritize financial performance over sustainability initiatives. The pandemic crisis adversely affected overall ESG performance, whereas interaction effects indicate that larger firms strengthened ESG efforts during the crisis period. These findings extend the literature on ESG antecedents by integrating supply chain capabilities into sustainability research and demonstrate how external shocks reshape the ESG priorities of emerging-market firms. The study offers important implications for policymakers, investors, and corporate managers seeking to strengthen sustainable development amid uncertainty.
