Peer Relationship Formation among Mid-Entry Immigrant Students : An Ethnographic Case Study of a Sixth-Grade Class at a Multicultural Alternative School
This ethnographic case study examined how peer relationships were formed and maintained among mid-entry immigrant students in a sixth-grade class at a multicultural alternative school, focusing on the school’s educational and daily-life support and students’ everyday interactions. The study drew on data collected in 2016 in Dasom Class at Byeolbit School in Seoul (both pseudonyms), where 13 students were enrolled. The dataset comprised field notes from approximately 70 hours of participant observation, homeroom teacher interviews, student-produced materials, a peer network survey, and documents on school operations. The data were reanalyzed in 2026 using Bourdieu’s concepts of field and social capital and Barth’s concept of boundaries. First, the school’s support for educational expenses, transportation, and care created conditions for students from families with differing financial circumstances and parental work schedules to participate in shared daily routines. Second, a student who was recognized for academic ability and sought out for help during lessons had limited interaction with peers during breaks. Another student wanted to form friendships and initiated contact with peers, yet conversations were often brief. Third, students who nominated each other as friends were observed resuming play after minor conflicts. In peer evaluations, difficulties encountered in interaction were also sometimes framed as characteristics of particular classmates. By comparing observed episodes with student and teacher accounts and peer-network nominations, the study shows that academic recognition did not necessarily coincide with close peer interaction, that conversations sometimes ended shortly after a student initiated contact, and that mutually nominated friends resumed play after minor conflicts.
