This study examines patterns of intercultural communication in 34 pairs of letters exchanged between Vietnamese international students and Korean university students. The Vietnamese students’ letters were segmented into meaning units and analyzed for the content, emotions, and functions of self-disclosure, while the Korean students’ replies were analyzed for response strategies, response-target selection, and content- and function-based correspondence. The Vietnamese students disclosed experiences and emotions mainly related to interpersonal relationships and academic studies, along with requests for information, advice, emotional support, and relationship building. The Korean students responded using multiple strategies, including empathy and emotional acknowledgment, encouragement, advice, positive reframing, and sharing their own experiences. Most self-disclosures were selected as response targets, and complementary responses that added support functions were more prominent than simple functional matches. These findings suggest that the letter exchange exhibited a pattern of text-based intercultural communication characterized by a “self-disclosureselectioncomplex response” structure.

본 연구는 베트남 유학생과 한국 대학생이 주고받은 34쌍의 편지를 대상으로 유학생의 자기개방과 한국 학생의 응답 전략 및 그 대응 관계를 분석하여 상호문화적 의사소통의 양상을 밝히는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 유학생의 편지를 의미 단위로 분절하여 자기개방의 내용·정서·기능을 분석하고, 이에 대한 한국 학생의 응답 전략과 선택 및 내용적·기능적 대응 관계를 살펴보았다. 분석 결과, 유학생의 자기개방에서는 교우·대인 관계와 학업·수업을 중심으로 다양한 경험과 정서가 제시되었으며, 정보 요청, 조언요청, 정서적 지지 요청, 관계 형성 요청도 함께 나타났다. 이에 대해 한국 학생은 공감·감정 인정, 위로·격려, 조언·해결책 제시, 긍정적 재해석, 자기 경험 제시 등을 복합적으로 사용하여 응답하였다. 또한 유학생이 제시한 자기개방의 대부분이 응답 대상으로 선택되었으며, 기능적으로는 일치 대응보다 다른 지원 기능을 덧붙이는 보완 대응이 두드러졌다. 이러한 결과는 편지 교환에서 ‘자기개방－선택－복합적 응답’의 구조가 나타나며, 상대의 경험을 응답 대상으로 삼아 자신의 경험이나 관점과 관련짓는 텍스트기반 상호문화적 의사소통의 양상을 보여 준다.
