This study aimed to identify the factors influencing financial consumers’ level of recognition of dark patterns in mobile banking and to derive meaningful implications for the directions of financial consumer education, policy, and practical responses to support financial consumers’ autonomous and rational decision-making. The main findings are as follows. First, the level of dark pattern recognition differed according to age, educational attainment, participation in digital education, and channels used to obtain financial information. Dark pattern recognition was relatively lower among consumers in their 50s and 60s than among those in their 20s, and among those enrolled in or having completed a master’s program or higher than among those with a university degree or lower. In contrast, consumers who had participated in digital education and those who primarily obtained financial information from financial institutions and digital media exhibited higher levels of dark pattern recognition. Second, differences in the recognition of specific types of dark patterns were identified according to the general characteristics of financial consumers. Specifically, recognition of the “Restriction” type differed according to age, educational attainment, participation in digital education, and whether consumers obtained financial information from financial institutions, public institutions, and digital media. Recognition of the “Asymmetry” type differed according to gender, participation in economic and financial education, and whether consumers obtained financial information through digital media. Recognition of the “Information Hiding” type differed according to educational attainment and participation in digital education, while recognition of the “Disparate Treatment” type differed according to age and participation in digital education. Third, the analysis of factors influencing the overall level of dark pattern recognition showed that higher levels of privacy sensitivity, the availability heuristic tendency, and the knowledge dimension of digital financial literacy were associated with higher levels of dark pattern recognition. In contrast, a stronger anchoring-and-adjustment heuristic tendency was associated with a lower level of dark pattern recognition. Fourth, different factors were found to have differential effects on the recognition of each type of dark pattern. For the “Restriction” type, higher levels of privacy sensitivity and the knowledge dimension of digital financial literacy, as well as a greater reliance on financial institutions as a source of financial information, were associated with higher levels of recognition. In contrast, a stronger anchoring-and-adjustment heuristic tendency was associated with lower recognition, and consumers in their 50s and 60s showed lower recognition than those in their 20s. For the “Asymmetry” type, the availability heuristic tendency, the behavioral dimension of digital financial literacy, and obtaining financial information through digital media were identified as factors associated with higher levels of recognition. In contrast, the anchoring-and-adjustment heuristic tendency was associated with a lower level of recognition of the “Asymmetry” type. For the “Information Hiding” type, the representativeness heuristic tendency and the behavioral dimension of digital financial literacy were associated with higher levels of recognition. In contrast, the anchoring-and-adjustment heuristic tendency was associated with a lower level of recognition, and educational attainment and participation in economic and financial education were negatively associated with recognition of the “Information Hiding” type after controlling for other variables. Finally, for the “Disparate Treatment” type, the availability heuristic tendency was associated with a higher level of recognition, whereas the anchoring-and-adjustment heuristic tendency was associated with a lower level of recognition. Among the general characteristics, consumers in their 50s showed lower recognition than those in their 20s. This study is significant in that it empirically identifies how financial consumers’ general characteristics, privacy sensitivity, heuristic tendencies, and digital financial literacy are associated with their level of recognition of dark patterns in mobile banking. Based on these findings, this study proposes that, in responding to dark patterns in the financial sector, regulation and supervision of deceptive interface design should be accompanied by customized education and protection policies that take into account financial consumers’ individual and cognitive characteristics as well as their digital financial capabilities.
