As dark patterns have become increasingly prevalent in online travel agencies (OTAs), growing attention has been paid to their influence on consumer decision-making. This study identified the major types of dark patterns used in online travel agencies based on the Korea Fair Trade Commission’s guidelines on dark patterns and developed travel booking interfaces reflecting these patterns as experimental stimuli. Responses from 400 Korean travel consumers were analyzed. The results showed that exposure to dark patterns significantly increased consumers’ perceived likelihood of impulse-buyingand negative emotions. Consumer responses also differed significantly across dark pattern types. Specifically, the types that elicited the highest perceived likelihood of impulse-buyingdiffered from those that generated the strongest negative emotions, indicating that the same dark pattern may influence consumers’ behavioral and emotional responses in different ways. In addition, evidence of the Third-Person Effectwas found, as consumers generally perceived that other people would be more susceptible to the influence of most dark pattern types than themselves. This study contributes to the literature by empirically demonstrating that different types of dark patterns evoke distinct consumer responses and that their behavioral and emotional effects vary across pattern types. Furthermore, by highlighting the gap between consumers’ actual responses and current regulatory standards, the findings offer practical implications for improving consumer protection policies and dark pattern regulations.
