Consumer Disposal Behavior of End-of-Life Small IT Devices from a Circular Economy Perspective : Focusing on Male College Students in their 20s
This study explores the disposal behavior of end-of-life small IT devices among male college students in their 20s—a demographic frequently identified as having low participation in the circular economy—at a time when the transition to a circular economy is increasingly emphasized. To achieve this, qualitative data were collected through one-hour in-depth interviews with ten male college students in their 20s who had experience purchasing small IT devices through secondhand transactions. Data analysis was guided by grounded theory, and a paradigm model was utilized to systematically capture and understand their disposal behaviors regarding end-of-life small IT devices. The analysis revealed that the central phenomenon was the “limited circular disposal of end-of-life small IT devices.” The causal conditions leading to this phenomenon included the “perception of items as unsellable,” the “perception of a lack of economic value,” and the “perceived cognitive and time costs required for transactions.” Additionally, the “low-involvement nature of products perceived as waste when broken” and the “experience of buying items cheaply through secondhand markets” emerged as contextual conditions. “Awareness of the circular economy” acted as an intervening condition, while the action/interaction strategies responding to the central phenomenon were identified as “relationship-based circular strategies,”“abandonment and storage strategies,” and “simple disposal strategies.” These strategies resulted in “oblivion due to neglect” and the “procrastination of disposal behavior.” Based on the paradigm model derived from these findings, “weakened participation in the circular economy due to constraints on circular disposal behavior” was identified as the core category. Consequently, male college students in their 20s were categorized into two distinct types: “non-participants in the circular economy” and “limited participants in the circular economy.” The findings indicate that the participation of male college students in their 20s in the circular economy was limited, and the limited redistribution of end-of-life small IT devices into the market caused inefficiencies in the flow of resource circulation. This study is significant in that it examines the disposal behavior of small IT devices among male college students in their 20s, and based on these insights, it provides policy and educational implications.
