A Study on Haircut Design Changes According to Hair Length and Slice Line in a Three Area Structures : One-Length, Graduation, and Same-Layer Cuts
Purpose: The present study aimed to investigate the changes in haircut shape and hair length according to three-section head division structures and slice line variations. Additionally, the changes in haircut form lines were analyzed through direct measurements and photographic observations to provide fundamental data for haircut education and design. Methods: The head was divided into three sections (G, B, and N), with the cutting starting point established at the nape point. The Same-Layer, Graduation, and One-Length techniques were applied to the G, B, and N sections, respectively. Hair lengths were set at 10, 15, and 20 cm from the nape point. Three slice lines (Parallel line, A-line, and V-line) were applied. After cutting, hair length and haircut shape were assessed through direct measurements and photographic documentation. Results: The A-line created progressively longer hair lengths toward the face, whereas the V-line produced progressively shorter hair lengths toward the face. As the head division area increased, the characteristic features of each haircut technique became more pronounced. Combining the Same-Layer, Graduation, and One-Length techniques created more diverse silhouettes and forms compared to the use of single haircut technique, thereby enhancing rhythm, movement, and dynamic visual effects. Conclusion: Head division and slice line direction were confirmed to be key factors influencing haircut shape and length. The V-line created an inward-curving effect with increased volume, whereas the A-line produced a refined and feminine appearance and the Parallel line created a stable and balanced silhouette. Furthermore, combining the Same-Layer, Graduation, and One-Length techniques effectively produced diverse haircut forms, offering fundamental data for haircut education and design.
