A Study on the Localization Strategy of Apple Town Square Brand Spaces through Historical and Cultural Landscapes
Global brand spaces increasingly seek to maintain a consistent brand identity while incorporating the historical and cultural contexts of individual places into spatial design. Beginning with Apple Union Square and the reopening of Regent Street in 2016, Apple expanded its retail environment from a sales-oriented store into a Town Square that accommodates learning, exchange, creativity, dwelling, and community activities. This study compares five cases in London, Milan, Paris, Washington, D.C., and Rome to examine how the shared principles of Town Square are localized through different historical and cultural landscapes. Based on a literature review and comparative case analysis, the study applies common criteria to the spatial and programmatic characteristics of Town Square, the place-specific conditions of historical and cultural landscapes, and the relationships between existing places and new brand spaces. The results show that historical and cultural landscapes are utilized at architectural, urban-spatial, and socio-cultural levels and are integrated into brand spaces through preservation and reconfiguration, connection, transformation and succession, and recontextualization. At the same time, the common Town Square principles of openness, dwelling and exchange, learning, and community remain consistent across the cases. Accordingly, this study identifies the localization of Apple Town Square as a core-variable structure in which shared brand principles are maintained while spatial implementation varies according to local conditions. It further demonstrates that historical and cultural landscapes can function as design resources that mediate brand consistency and place-specific differentiation.
