Multiple Accounts as a “Strategic Space of Agency” : The Construction of Self, Relationships, and Emotions among Instagram Users in Their Twenties
As social media platforms have become central spaces for everyday communication, the use of multiple accounts has been expanding, particularly among people in their twenties. This study conducted in-depth interviews with Instagram users in their twenties who operate multiple accounts to explore how they construct the self, regulate relationships, and manage emotions through these accounts. The findings show that users perceive their social media accounts as major channels through which they form a “first impression” on others. Accordingly, they strategically separate their accounts and construct different selves that correspond to the distinctive characteristics of each account. On their primary accounts, users presented positive and idealized images centered on a socially acceptable “public self.” By contrast, on their secondary accounts, they revealed a “private self” within intimate relationships and engaged in more candid and everyday forms of self-expression. Users also adjusted the depth of self-disclosure and the range of expression according to the relational characteristics of their audiences, thereby constructing different versions of the “self they present” in accordance with each relational context. Furthermore, while users controlled their emotions and emphasized positive affect on their primary accounts, they used their secondary accounts to release suppressed emotions and share vulnerable feelings, thereby alleviating the emotional tension caused by social comparison and self-censorship. Overall, multiple-account use functioned as a “strategic space of action” in which users organized their selves according to interactional contexts, negotiated relational boundaries, and selectively managed their emotions through multiple accounts. Within this space, users revealed themselves both as “relational selves” who coordinate social relationships and as “agentic actors” who selectively manage and reconstruct their emotions.
